Expat voters give PP an extra seat

Although still pending official confirmation, it seems that Mariano Rajoy’s Partido Popular has wrested a seat from the CiU in Barcelona by just 238 votes.

After the initial count last Sunday gave the seat to the moderate nationalist party by a slim margin of 71, the expatriate result - 3,927 votes for PP vs 3,689 for CiU - appears to have given the right-wing conservatives an extra seat in parliament that slightly erodes the socialists’ overall majority (PSOE - 169, PP - 154, CiU - 10).

The second seat that the conservatives had been hoping that the foreign vote would swing in their favour, however, was retained by the socialists.

In Vizcaya, Josu Montalbán (58,338 votes) held on to his seat by a margin of 291 after receiving 2,624 expat votes compared to the 1,312 for PP candidate, Marisa Arrue (58,047).
