Trip Advisor, Catalan and xenophobia

I was reading El Periódico newspaper this morning and a letter caught my eye which I thought would be good to relate. Apparently this Catalan guy called Joan M. Serch wrote some kind of review on Trip Advisor about his stay in La Seu d’Urgell, Catalonia.

He wrote his review in Catalan and got a reply back that went: Thank you very much for taking the time out to write a review about La Seu d’Urgell. Unfortunately we can’t accept your review in the Catalan language. If you’d like to write it in either English, French, Italian, Spanish or German, we would be happy to accept it. OK fair enough, this guy writes a nice review in a language that very few people speak and gets the above message back.

The main reason I’m writing this is because of his ending comments in El Periódico newspaper. He says that he is sick and tired of the xenophobic attitudes towards the Catalan language and the Catalan people and it’s time to stop! Woa big boy. I really think Mr Joan M. Serch got out of his pram on that one. I’ve just come back from a trip to Google in Dublin and it appears that Gaelic and English live in harmony with each other. There’s no putting down of the English language and vice versa. I can’t imagine an Irish person writing to Trip Advisor and going off on one because they wouldn’t print his review in Gaelic. Am I missing something? Maybe Mr Serch should do a bit of travelling and experience new cultures as he’s obviously a bit stuck in his ways.

    in today’s periodico there was a good reply to this guy. it said something like ” it’s people you you Joan M Serch that creates bad feeling about Catalans and Catalonia” and ” if you want to make yourself heard write in English like I do and then everyone understands”. How true.

    Te respondo en castellano, para que puedas leerlo en una lengua Aceptada por Trip Advisor.
    Entre las personas de distintos paises puede haber problemas de comunicación a causa del idioma, existe una profesión, no sé si la conoces, que es la de traductor. Incluso el Google puede servir.

    Los estados miembros de la CE (creo que ya son 27) se comunican cada vez con más lenguas oficiales y algunas de ellas realmente habladas por muy poca población europea, pero como son oficiales, no se las discrimina. En España tenemos cuatro lenguas oficiales, a saber: castellano (mal llamado por muchos español), euskera, galego y català. Pues bien, las tres últimas no tienen rango de oficiales en la CE, pese a serlo en su país. ¿Qué dirían los alemanes o franceses si cualquier normativa europea se publicase sólo en inglés? Malta, miembro de la CE, tiene dos idiomas oficiales: inglés y maltés, y, que curioso, ambos son idiomas oficiales en la CE, ¿por qué en España no ocurre esto?. El maltés lo hablan unas 400.000 personas en todo el mundo. ¿Sabes cuántas personas hablan catalán y lo entienden en todo el mundo? Pues más de 10.000.000. ¡qué diferencia con el maltés!. Pero si acudimos a las estadísticas de otros idiomas, tenemos que el finés lo hablán 5.000.000 de personas, el irlandés o gaélico lo hablan 2.700.000 personas (la cuarta parte que el catalán), pero de éstas, sólo 355.000 lo hablan con fluidez.

    No pienses solo en tus derechos, piensa en los derechos de los demás y… sobre todo, en tus obligaciones.

    Dado que los catalanes somos muy tolerantes, ya va siendo hora de exigírselo al resto.

    ha ha, more than 10,000,000 speak Catalán? You must be joking pal. After living in Barcelona for a number of years I don’t think the Catalans are very tolerant. I found them very rude, intolerant and tight-fisted. Oh and by the way “catalunya no es un pais”.Adeu

    Lewis eres un poko ingnoratnte un tu comentario, quizas viviste en Barcelona, pero el catalán se habla alrededor de toda Catalunya, no solo en la ciudad de Barcelona. Es más en otras comunidades autonomas, tales como la Comunidad Valenciana o las Baleares. Me gustaria saber de que ciudad eres, para creerte con la posibilidad de criticar a los catalanes y decir q somos unos mal eduacados, mas grosero eres tu diciendo cosas como esta, y es una muestra más de tus evidentes limitaciones,

    @Lewis – si tio eres un poco ignorante – informate un poco más antes de formular opiniones por favor.

    @Albert – parece que tu no sabes otro idioma que el Catalán – me das pena nano. Aprender un idioma te puede enriquecer la vida. Quiza un día te gustaría viajar a Madrid, ¿no?
