Spanish Grand Prix at Montmelo 2009

With Bahrain out of the way and 3 wins out of 4 Jensen Button must be floating on air. It was an especially memorable win for Jensen as the Brawn didn’t have a competitive edge at the Bahrain circuit. The championship leader believes that the improvement of rival teams made the race for first place in Bahrain a closely fought contest.

On the 8th – 10th May 2009 the Formula 1 Gran Premio de España will take place at the Catalonian circuit of Montmelo. With the Spanish Grand Prix being next in line after last weekend’s Bahrain race, things are certainly hotting up within the F1 community.

Jensen Button has it all to do and he could well be the surprise champion of this year’s competition if all goes to plan. The British driver has not had the best of times in F1 either. It’s a case of a great driver not getting the right car. A similar thing is happening with Fernando Alonso. The double world champion has not had a decent drive for two years now and last year could almost be called a sabbatical year for him as the Renault cars were just not competitive enough to make a dent on the championship. Alonso finished 8th yesterday and managed to snatch a point.

The next race at Montmelo should certainly see some changes in most of the top cars as it’s almost always been a reference for the F1 teams whereby they’ve “ironed out” most of the defects and troubles that the cars usually present at the start of the season.

McLaren seem to get into hot water every year and Lewis Hamilton even threatened to walk out on the team that launched him to F1 stardom in the wake of the latest scandal in the very first race of the season at Melbourne, Australia. Hamilton was accused of lying (under orders from above) to advance into 3rd place and claim a pole position. Apparently, Jarno Trulli in his Toyota went onto the grass in front of Hamilton with the safety car on the track. Lewis Hamilton then proceeded to let him pass (which he didn’t have to do) just in case he was infringing any rules. After the race he told the stewards a different story and said that Trulli forced his way past which is completely untrue as all was revealed in the radio exchanges that the stewards heard. Rules state that you cannot overtake whilst the safety car is out but says nothing about passing a fellow driver who happens to spin off or as in Trulli’s case went onto the grass verge therefore letting Lewis Hamilton through legally.
