British Comedian Ricky Gervais Speaks out Against Bull Fighting in Catalonia

Ricky Gervais, the well known British comedy actor famous for his series ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras’ has recorded a video supporting the pressure group Prou! that is demanding an end to bull fighting in the region of Catalonia. His 43 second video, which can be seen on Youtube has already had some 24,000 views.

Ricky has already aired his feelings about bullfighting and came out in support of the group ‘Prou!’, which means ‘enough‘ in English last December and has also issued a press release.

Working closely with the WSPA - World Society for the Protection of Animals, Ricky Gervais appears in the video and urges people all over the world to support this legal initiative by the pressure support group.

Ricky asks “What pleasure can there be in seeing an animal mortally wounded?” “Bull fighting should be stopped; its cruel. I’m glad animal rights activists are putting pressure on the government in Catalonia,” he went on, “and they have my full support”.

I do understand that the sport seems cruel and barbaric but it is a part of cultural identity. The Spanish have had el encierro and la corrida since nearly biblical times. The whole process is part of the society as a whole and defines their culture; it should not be stripped of the society ‘cold turkey’ because doing so would take away years of tradition. Maybe the ceremony (and it IS a ceremony) should be stepped down a small amount and should not occur as often, but not fully removed from Spain. It’s like here in America, we celebrate July 4th as Independence Day. We all get to light fireworks and have a good time. But because instead of putting slight restrictions on the ceremony, a group goes too far and gets the partying banned in most states…
