Calling all fans of extreme sports and exciting aerobatic displays! Come to Barcelona and enjoy the magnificent men in their flying machines as the Red Bull Air Race World Series 2009 takes to the skys.
On 3rd and 4th October the catalan city of Barcelona will host yet again the World Cup Competition of the Red Bull Air Race. This is an unprecedented event in the field of the aerobatic aircraft sport that combines both speed with acrobatics.
Red Bull Air Racing was founded in 2003 as a new discipline of aeronautical sports. Unlike the famous Reno Air Race, that hosts a speed competition of World War II airplanes, this new event requires more precision, skill and acrobatics. The competition consists of a designated course that the pilots have to complete with their aircraft.The acrobatic aircraft they’ll be using will be: the Extra 300, MXS or Zivko Edge 540. They must pass through a series of inflatable pylons, known as gates, two of which are placed out in the sea. If the pilot goes through a gate too low or high, he will be penalized. The pilot who completes the route in the quickest time with the least penalties is the winner.
This is not an event for the faint hearted, as these sports planes can reach up to 400 km / h. After the competitions that took place in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), San Diego (USA), Ontario (Canada), Porto (Portugal) and Budapest (Hungary), Barcelona is the last round of the challenge that has seen some unbelievable competition. In May 2006 the Red Bull Air Race attracted over 1,300,000 visitors to Barcelona, where the beaches were full of spectators who wanted to see just what these planes were all about.
This year the race is on between British pilot Paul Bonhomme, who has won 55 points, and Austrian Hannes Arch, who now has 51 points. The championship battle is still not decided and you’ll witness a clash that will make your hair stand on end! You will enjoy a fantastic atmosphere, where thousands of fans will be cheering on their favorite pilots right on barcelona beach!
