Catalonia is different – Cops with beers!

Ok I know we all know what goes on but i couldn’t resist this – two Guardia Urbanos drinking beer in a bar/restaurant in Barcelona. Is this right? Is this normal? According to a lot of my Spanish and Catalan friends – yes it’s quite normal here in Spain for traffic cops to have a quiet or not so quiet beer or two while on duty.

They had two glasses of beer each while I was eating my ” hamburgueser con cebolla y queso” so I thought they wouldn’t mind me taking a quick shot of them.

Cops with beers

A few questions to reflect:

What if they were drinking a “light beer” ie. non alcoholic – is that alright then?

Is it still alright to be in uniform and drinking a “light beer” ?

How about the fact that they had guns, is that alright?

How about that they had motorcycles parked outside and they got on them afterwards, is that cool?

This comes after someone told me about a group of 10 Spanish cops who were drinking wine while on duty.

Final thoughts: Even if it were a non alcoholic beer they were drinking, what sort of image are they portraying to the people they claim to serve? I wonder if thse two officers of the law made any unsuspecting driver blow into the breathalyser after their little tea party?

  2. Alcohol consumption can affect an individual differently depending on personality, mood and personal history. Hopefully, the Spanish police tend to be “happy” drunks which could mean less citiations, less abuse of power, and maybe even less likelihood of using a gun. Just a thought….
