Mariano Fortuny in La Pedrera, Barcelona
Around 300 works aim to show off the many facets of Mariano Fortuny; painter, artist, inventor, dressmaker and lighting technician amongst other things.
Fortuny was one of the most singular figures of art in Catalonia at the beginning of the twentieth century. He was the son of Maria Fortuny and was baptized by the French writer Marcel Proust as the “Leonardo of the twentieth century”.
La Pedrera in Barcelona in association with “La Obra Social de Caixa Catalunya is holding the exposition: Fortuny, el mago de Venecia (Fortuny, the magician of Venice) where around 300 of his works of art will be on display.
Mariano Fortuny Madrazo, a complete artista in every sense of the Word and a true Pioneer of modernity knew exactly how to integrate fashion and textile design with his gifts as a painter, photographer and lighting technician.
For the first time, Catalonia will be able to get to know the works of this half forgotten artist who became a reference point for eccentric art in the first decades of the twentieth century.
Commissioned by Giandomenico Romanelli, director of La Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and by the director and by the director and conservator of the Museo Fortuny de Venecia, Daniela Ferretti and Claudio Franzini, the exposition revindicates the figure of Fortuny as the great artist and artisan.
One of the works you will be able to see is the scenery which was designed for the opera Tristan e Isolda by Wagner that was represented at the Scala in Milan in 1899. It was precisely the year of 1900 that Fortuny registered the patent for his system of scenic illumination by indirect lighting which he designed for the montage.
The exposition also discovers Fortuny’s quality as a fashion designer. In Venice, along with his model and wife Henrietta, he created in the Palazzo Pesaro Orfei a workshop dedicated to the printing of designs on fabrics.
This is a great way to spend a few hours delving into the little known world of Mariano Fortuny Madrazo.

I enjoyed this exhibitions. There were some small oil or tempura sketches of Venice which were not in a prominent position in the exhibition and could have been overlooked. They were actually very delightful to see.
