La Mercè 2009 Barcelona

Enormous giants walking through the streets of Barcelona, dragons breathing fire, devils dancing around in mayhem, curious creatures and people building human towers. The castells, for example, will be place in a variety of different public places such as Plaça St.Jaume where the town hall is. You also have to hold your breath as a little girl or boy reaches the top of the castell and holds aloft a handkerchief!

The Correfoc is another spectacular event. It’s a cultural and traditional parade in Catalonia which takes place in the evening time and where many people get dressed up as scary demons and night creatures and dance and jump around the spectacular firework display. You can be part of a breathtaking ceremony full of energy and vibrant rhythms.

The parades of the famous gegants which are huge giants made from paper maché remain true to the long traditional history of Catalonia which you will see many times during the week of the Mercè 2009. You will get to enjoy a unique and special atmosphere accompanied by traditional flute and drum music. It’s just an amazing event full of happiness and is really quite special.
