Jail for husband who refused to split ‘El Gordo’ windfall

The Supreme Tribunal upheld a twelve-month jail sentence imposed on a man from Canet de Mar near Barcelona in Catalonia, who refused to split a Christmas lottery windfall with his former wife.
Guillermo B separated from his wife, Gloria F, just a month before Christmas 2003 after already having used joint funds to purchase a tenth share (un décimo) in a ticket for ‘The Big One’ (El Gordo) Christmas lottery, the draw for which was made on the 22nd December.
The ticket netted a €200,000 euro prize, but Guillermo only handed over €33,000 to Gloria on the grounds that she was only one of an alleged syndicate of six also comprising Guillermo, three of his close relatives and a family friend.
The other members of this imaginary syndicate were cleared by the Supreme Tribunal, overturning sentences imposed by Barcelona provincial court, though Guillermo will serve time in jail and has been made to return the €66,000 euros owing to his former wife.
