Heavy Snow Wreaks Havoc in Barcelona and Catalonia

The heavy snow in Catalonia on Monday has caused misery for thousands of users, around 220,000 to be exact. Flights were cancelled left right and centre, schools were closed throughout Barcelona and the region and many were left struggling to get home.

Around 60 cm of snow had fallen in the worst affected areas of Catalonia prompting the local and regional bodies to cancel classes for more than 145,000 students across 476 schools.

Electricity was knocked out for more thousands on Monday while the roads were literally in chaos and at a standstill. Many roads were either restricted or prohibited.

Around 300 lorries were stranded at La Jonquera, Spain’s border with France due to closure.Buses were suspended before the evening rush hour and commuters were advised to take the metro instead.

The Barcelona City Council enabled three sports centres, five garages for parking and around 3000 beds in 50 hotels at a reduced price for people who could not leave the city of Barcelona, but according to Barcelona’s Mayor, Jordi Hereu, “no citizen has requested” these services so far.

The airport in Barcelona, El Prat, was operating as normal but six flights out of the airport in Girona were cancelled along with several delays. Other inbound flights especially from other areas of Spain and European cities like London and Baden Baden were also cancelled because of the snowfall, which, accompanied by strong winds didn’t ease the problems.

Today is Wednesday and most parts of Barcelona are clear and you would never have thought that a day ago the city was plunged into chaos. Roads are pretty clear, metro services and the train (Cercanias) seem to be ok, too.
