The Wonderful Grec Festival Barcelona
One of Barcelona’s more cultural festivals has jus got under way: El Grec. This year the Grec Festival in Barcelona will run from June 13th – August 1st. As always, many of the fantastic events are either free to the public or cost very little. The festival itself refers to the Greek theatre or teatre Grec in Montjuïc and although we’ve missed the opening of the Grec Festival Barcelona which was also a washout due to the heavy rain falling on Monday14th June, there are many more wonderful things to see and enjoy.

Theatre – Grec Festival Barcelona 2010
For example on July 10th and 11th theatre lovers will be able to see Fast Forward – The Fast Forward mini festival explores the freshest, most innovative emerging works on the dramatic art scene. This year, Fast Forward focuses on Japan, to which the festival’s “Panorama” section is devoted.

Music – Grec Festival Barcelona 2010
For the music lovers among us there is a chance to see the lovely Corinne Bailey Rae on July 21 at this year’s Grec Festival Barcelona – After releasing her eponymous debut album in 2006, Corinne Bailey Rae shot from being an unknown singer to stardom in just two years, selling records by the million worldwide. On the way, her musical talent won her many distinguished admirers, including the likes of Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder and the Arctic Monkeys. This promising career had to take a back seat for a time after the death of her husband, Jason Rae, but Corinne Bailey Rae is back at last now, with a new album. The songs on her 2010 release, entitled The Sea, largely inspired by those tragic events, shows this outstanding artist finds new voice, a new musical language full of meaning, rich in feeling, drenched in soul.

Dance – Grec Festival Barcelona 2010
How about something for the lovers of dance?
Also performing at the teatre Grec for the Grec Festival Barcelona will be Eva Yerbabuena with a performance called Lluvia from July 31st – August 1st – Melancholy has long formed part, in one way or another, of the bailaora Eva Yerbabuena’s performances. This time, however, for her latest production, it is the very source of inspiration. Taking a poem by Horacio García whose opening line is “El silencio hace daño cuando es puro” ["Silence hurts when it is pure"], the flamenco dancer has created a series of pieces that evoke silence, communication breakdown, and the loss of one of the senses. The accompanying music, written by composer and guitarist Paco Jarana, features styles from by-gone times, such as murcianas, levanticas, tarantos, tarantas, milongas, tanguillos, soleás and even a cuplé. Together, dance and music create a show full of emotion, a journey into our essence, that essence that we can only discover through pain, heartbreak and melancholy.
