He was born in Reus, Tarragona (Catalonia) in 1852.  When he graduated from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona his teacher said “hemos dado un título a un loco o a un genio, el tiempo lo dirá” – “We’ve given a degree in architecture  to either a crazy man or a genius, only time will tell”.
