FOUR Firemen Die Tackling Blaze in Tarragona Catalonia

FOUR firemen have died whilst tackling a blaze in Horta de Sant Joan in Tarragona after becoming trapped by a circle of flames.

Strong winds meant that although the fire was nearly under control by 17.00hrs yesterday, half an hour later it had multiplied in strength and threatened to engulf nearby residential areas.

A total of 200 firemen, 200 members of the military emergency unit, and 21 hydroplanes have been attempting to control the inferno, which continues to burn.

It has already put paid to 800 hectares of forest, part of which belongs to the Els Ports nature reserve.

Two roads – the T-334 and the T-330 were cordoned off, but later reopened yesterday lunchtime.

The firemen who lost their lives were from Lleida and the towns of Tremp, Mollerussa and La Pobla de Segur in the Lleida province.

The government of Catalunya declared a day of mourning yesterday.

I am so sorry, my boyfriend and I love this region and especially this village with it’s great dwellers, in fact we will be relocating there in the near future… our thoughts go to the families of these very brave men.
