El Barça Begins New Era with Sandro Rosell

June 14th 2010 will go down in the history of F.C Barcelona as the day that Sandro Rosell won the elections to become the thirty-ninth president of Barça, with 61% of the votes (35 021), and the day on which the Blaugrana fans turned away from the controversial tenure of Joan Laporta. One of the other candidates, Jaume Ferrer, received only 10% (6168) of the votes being the least voted of the four candidates.

“I’ll be the president for all club members for a Catalan Barcelona and open to the Catalans from outside Catalonia,” Rosell said shortly after learning he had won the election.
Among Rosell’s most important promises is his project to give a facelift to the Camp Nou and dismissing the costly project of Sir Norman Foster in the process. Other intentions are to create models like the ‘Masia’ (the football academy where all Barça cadets start out) in different countries and his promise to try to negotiate with Mediapro to play games at 5 o’ clock in the afternoon, to limit the number of club members, give greater prominence to Barcelona members and disassociate the club from the figure of Joan Oliver – the spy in the Camp Nou.
Becoming a presidential candidate with the most votes in the history of Barcelona have marked the arrival of Sandro Rosell and sends a clear message to club members that support Laporta. Despite living the best years of its history the club members have given Joan Laporta the thumbs down to his controversial managing of the club which he engulfed in politics and to which the Barça fans have finally had enough and turned their backs on.
“I’ve now got to get working and I’m putting myself at the disposition of Joan Laporta so as to make the transfer process go as smoothly as possible,” said Rosell.
