Crisis blamed for alarming number of stray cats

A spokesman for Barcelona’s Animal Protection League suspects that the economic crisis may be partly to blame for a 20% increase in the number of abandoned cat numbers this summer – to 140.

“Owners are starting to cut back on veterinary fees,” he explained.

Anyone thinking of getting one should be aware that it costs, on average, between three and five hundred euros a year to keep a cat.

Ouch! I’d wish that the owners of dogs in a certain street in Carmelo Barcelona would stop taking them for walks near my wife’s school. They seem to think that the nice flower gardens the ayuntamiento has so kindly erected and the school building is some sort of “piss area” Nice !

This is quite distressing news and probably bound to get worse with the holidays approaching. Would be great if there were more public service announcements and more educating of the populace that having a pet is a serious commitment.
