The first phase of Catalonia’s linguistic immersion programme will start on february 6th and will see the best part of 80,000 immigrants learning Catalan until the year 2013. These will be mainly infant and primary school children.

Alex Salmond to visit Catalonia
Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond is to visit the devolved Spanish region of Catalonia.
The visit will take place in the autumn, said a senior figure in the Catalan government.
Government vice-president Josep-Lluis Carod-Rovira announced the plan after meeting Mr Salmond in Edinburgh.

I was sort of horrified to learn this morning whilst my 10 year old daughter was going over her homework in Catalan that Catalonia’s primary school children know virtually nothing about the rest of Spain regarding geography.
My wife happened to ask her if she knew any of the names of Spain’s river and she drew a blank. [...]
