Carod Rovira against the Spanish language

Not only does Carod Rovira seek to destroy the Spanish language in Catalonia, but he also attempts to banish it from the countries where it is spoken. The princely sum of 1 Million euros that the Generalitat of Catalonia has just donated to “promoting bilingualism in Ecuador “is nothing more but an attempt to get Ecuador to return to their native language at the expense of Castellano (Spanish). Is anybody able to shed light on how the Quechuan language would help them when they leave their country in search of work?
Spain, for example, is one of the largest colonies with foreign workers.

The attempt would be comical if it were not for serious issues such as the welfare of these individuals involved. That 1 million euro cheque, together with the other many millions that the Government has destined for these so called “cultural educational and productive projects” would be much better used on health, food, shelter and vocational training, instead of a native language which the people already know that will be of little or no use to them.

But the fanaticism, petulance, daring and narrow-mindedness of people like Carod-Rovira, who is behind this particular project, is what leads to such nonsense. Furthermore, the grotesque climax of Carod Rovira’s swashbuckling effort to banish Castellano and to make himself understood to the Ecuadorian authorities with whom he has signed the agreement has not been in Quechuan nor Catalán but in Spanish. That is also the language with which many Catalans who have triumphed in this world have had to use in order to open up new markets and make progress.

Incidentally, I wonder what language was spoken in Perpignan by Carod and the ETA terrorists? I doubt very much that he knows any Euskadi or the Basque terrorists Catalan for that matter.

  2. Your argument is utterly ridiculous. I invite you to take a look at the relevant website from the government of Equador, explaining the work of the project to which the ACCD(and not Carod personally nor Presidència)has contributed:

When your site is bilingual, or even arrives to a sufficient level of intellectual cohesion in English, you will have the right to criticise the MULTIlingualism of Ecuador. Until then please stop inventing poisonous nonsense about projects of solidarity undertaken by the Catalan government.

  3. My dear Mathew, I do love your sense of humour. Far from being utterly ridiculous, the article was a direct translation from the noted newspaper ABC, I don’t know if you read the news in Spanish by the way.

Yours is a typical example comment from a “wannabee radical Catalan” and most people with a “sufficient level of intellectual cohesion in English” would poo poo your delirious ideals. You’ve spent far too long in this region my friend.

  4. You’re both missing the point. This flagrant misuse of public money is simply to score two political points: 1) We love native languages and 2) PSOE in Madrid don’t care about the third world so we loving locals have to spend our local taxes to help people.

In my opinion local or regional governments should stop interfering in other countries and spend their monies on local or regional infrastructure / projects. It’s up to central government to spend public money on “aid projects”, and if regional authorities have budget excess to spend the should give it to an NGO (ONG). Or lower taxes and give taxpayers back our right to spend OUR money on OUR projects.

BTW; I assume ETA & C.R. spoke in Occitane? That is the local language, after all!

  5. I don’t see how from the fact “give 1 M€ to protect minor and endangered languages” you come up with the conclusion “Carod Rovira attempts to banish Spanish rom the countries where it is spoken”. Unbelievable. What I do see is lots of hatred towards Carod and a lack of coherence in your arguments.

  6. I suggest you read some Spanish press Lluis other than the partisan Catalan press you seem to be used to. Regarding the “lack of coherence”, while twats such as Carod Rovira are out spending your money on embassies and consulates around the world and chucking wads of cash at any indigenous tribes that’ll listen to him (in Spanish ha ha) Spain has just topped the European league of unemployment. Wouldn’t that money be better spent elsewhere? It seems to me that Catalonia, apart from having the proverbial “chip on its shoulder”, also suffers from an inferiority complex rather like certain men who buy Ferraris and Maseratis to make up what they lack in the trouser department!

  7. What about all the efforts (money included) that spanish government spends on embassies? army? national sports team? Instituto Cervantes? It’s incredible you speak about catalan government in such a demagogy way and you say nothing about the main nationalist movement in spain that it is spread everywhere(of course in your webpage too): the spanish.
