Barcelona – The city of Counts

Barcelona is a wonderful city that is located in north eastern Spain just 120 km from the Pyrenees and France. On the shores of the Mediterranean and partially offset by a natural park which covers over 8,000 hectares, the traveller and tourist finds an interesting contrast between the Serra de Collserola, the tenth most populous city in the European Union and stunning sea views. With a large international exposure it is hardly surprising that Barcelona has become a cosmopolitan city that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Virtually all districts of Barcelona are worthy of interest from visitors, but there happens to be one that especially brings together several features that make it a place of extraordinary vitality, day and night. It is the district of La Ribera, the commercial centre of the city in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Its popularity has transcended that there is a tendency to differentiate it into 2 sectors: La Ribera and the Born. Such differentiation is because it is located in the old Mercat Central (Central Market), although this area was formerly known as La Ribera del Rec Comtal (Rivera de la Acequia Condal). To avoid discrepancies between the two sectors, today this set is known as El Born district.

With architectural elements that contain rich modernist and gothic ruins, each and every one of its streets conveys a special intensity that fuelled cultural renowned artists such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Manolo Hugué among others. This is an enclave of the city of Barcelona which is one of the “must sees” in which culture, gastronomy and leisure are faithfully represented by a wide network of museums, art galleries, Foundations, Companies, Bookstores, Specialty Shops, Design Spaces, Restaurants, Antique shops, Artisans, Cafes, Pubs and Cocktail Bars. Summing up, this is a place where the combination of these 3 factors (Culture, Leisure and Gastronomy) provides the visitor with the necessary ingredients to actively enjoy the city.

I recommend you visit Barcelona, capital of the Mediterranean Spain. It’s my favourite city in Spain, both the architecture (specially the Sagrada Familia which was started in 1882 and still has not ended O_o) and the gastronomy (the Mediterranean diet) are sublime.

The only thing i don’t like about Barcelona (but in general in all Spain) is that there a few people able to speak English fuently, so if you don’t speak spanish try to do a spanish course in Barcelona first.

Try to book hotels in advance, the prices changes a lot from month to month. Enjoy Barcelona!!
