The President of FC Barcelona is still engaged in his rather obsessive private onslaught of downgrading the players of Real Madrid. Yesterday, in his third consecutive day of criticism of the 160 million euros invested by Florentino Peréz that has brought to real Madrid the last two winners of the coveted Balon d’Or; Laporta was not happy with his opposite number and promptly accused him of “spending compulsively.”

This time he went further with his lack of respect and hinted that Real Madrid achieved the target money through “favours”. It is distressing to see the president of a team that has just completed the most successful season in its history and fall back into “playing the victim”, a role that has done nothing but damage to Barcelona’s reputation. This obsession with Madrid, this inferiority complex that he hardly knows how to suppress is in fact overshadowing the enjoyment of a triple win that is both brilliant and thoroughly deserved by this great club.

But as they say, time will tell and it usually puts each one in his/her rightful place. In fact very little time has passed by and now we see how the austere Laporta, who has been literally tearing his hair out concerning Real Madrid’s spending spree, has now burst onto the scene with a bid of 50 million euros for Valencia’s David Villa when his transfer to Madrid was already signed and sealed.

Is not that compulsive spending? Where does this leave Barça’s excellent work ethics and talent for attracting new stars? Is this not both arrogant and imperialist to offer 40 million euros, the transfer of two players (Bojan and Caceres) plus incentives to get into a closed agreement with Real Madrid for 42 million euros? Or maybe it’s just an obsession, who knows?

Both Laporta and Barcelona are quite within their rights to offer whatever they feel like for any footballer, because at the moment we are in a free market economy where the price of any given player is exactly what a club is willing to pay for him. He should therefore leave out the cheap demagoguery and the austerity that is not only harming his own reputation but that of a club that really should question whether or not they want Coco the clown to represent them as president. Each club is free to pay the money it chooses and if Laporta has not yet splashed out 96 million euros for a player it simply means he hasn’t got the money.
