Ex-Barça star critically ill after car smash

Guillermo Amor is in a critical condition at a hospital in Tortosa (Tarragona) after a serious car accident at around 2.20am yesterday morning on the A-7  motorway near L’Ametlla de Mar.

The 40 year old former Barça star was initially taken to a health centre in L’Ametlla, but was subsequently transferred to the Verge de la Cinta Hospital, where he underwent surgery at 5am.

Amor was a key member of Johan Cruyff’s ‘Dream Team’, playing 550 matches for Barcelona CF, scoring 89 goals and winning a number of medals, including one Champions League, two European Super Cups, five Spanish Liga titles and three Copas del Rey. He left the Camp Nou in 1998 to join Fiorentina, where he stayed for two seasons before joining Villarreal (00-02) before ending his playing career with a single season in the Scottish league playing for Livingston.

Amor then spent four seasons in a variety of back-room roles with Barcelona, latterly as director of the Sant Joan Despí sporting complex, although the club decided not to renew his contract when it expired last summer.
