80% of teachers on strike in Catalunya

80% of teachers (excluding universities) in Cataunya today have decided to go on strike in protest of a future law regarding education in the region.

These past few days teachers have been “recommending” that children stay at home as “we can’t guarantee the service that a child deserves” said Rosa Cañadell – spokesperson from the Ustec union.

Personally I think it’s a big joke and if every parent follows those guidelines it means that around 500,000 kids will have to stay at home. Yesterday, in The Periódico de Catalunya it spoke about “servicios mínimos” and my wife got straight on the phone to the Headmistress to find out exactly what they meant by this term.

The Headmistress kindly attended my wife and explained that “well, we don’t know anything yet about these minimum services and we’ll have to see what can be done”. “We’ll send a note home with your children later on today, ok bye bye cheers for calling”.

The point is this; if you don’t ask you don’t get – especially in Spain. The director (headmistress) was quite content to not say anything to any of the parents about these so called minimum services and leave it at that. Less work, day off, put my feet up, call it what you will.

There was also the point about the school meals which cost me around 200 Euros a month for my two kids. What happens to the meal I paid for? Do we swallow that one as well?

Well, my kids went to school today and they’ll have a meal. I didn’t see too many parents at the school today and I guess that the kids who actually turned up are from the parents who actually give a damn about their education unlike the school headmistress who we feel “le supo a cuerno quemado” having to attend them.
