Alice in Barcelona
Alice in Wonderland is back in vogue thanks to a film adaptation by the master film director Tim Burton and starring the great Johnny Depp. But this is not the only area in which Alice is making a comeback: Artists are also taking a new look at the inspiring world of Alice.
Alice in Barcelona – Exhibition by Dutch artist Pat Andrea
Alice has been different things to different people and now at the Arts Centre Santa Monica on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, visitors can appreciate a psychedelic and at times monstrous vision of Alice. A snaking mural of the protagonist goes winding through the centre’s staircase until it reaches the first floor where there is an exhibition by artist Pat Andrea, born in The Hague, Netherlands in 1942 and considered one of most important illustrators of today.
A few years ago the editorial Diane de Selliers proposed a project to Andrea: to illustrate the two books by Lewis Carroll about Alice and her adventures including two large illustrations for every chapter. Andrea’s twist on the proposal was to depict a different picture of Alicia in each of these illustrations, as according to him, through these drawings, he could represent each and every one of the young women of the world. These unique drawings make up the exhibit at the Arts Centre Santa Monica.
If you want to visit the exhibition, which gives a fresh and up-close look at one of the most heralded modern classics by one of the most important artists of today, you can rent apartments in Barcelona.
