With only nine games left to play this season leaders Real Madrid and Barcelona FC have 74 points a piece with C.F Valencia trailing behind by a massive 21 points.
Both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are wary that a slip-up before April’s El Clasico could prove very costly indeed. both teams are desperate for wins this weekend that will surely aid as a morale booster ahead of El Clasico 2010.It’s incredible that at this stage of the competition the top two teams are head-locked at the top of the table with Valencia trailing by 21 points.
Barcelona could be a bit tired after Wednesday’s Champions League clash at The Emirates Stadium in London where they let slip a two goal lead and let Arsenal in through the back door to snatch a 2-2 result. By rights Barcelona should have buried Arsenal on Wednesday and Barça coach Guardiola said that the team’s performance was better than any of their European displays last season when they won the coveted trophy. Barcelona’s captain Carles Puyol added “If we play like we did in London we will drop very few points and if we want to win titles we always have to go out like we did against Arsenal”.
Barcelona play hosts to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday with the trip to Madrid looming on the horizon. Meanwhile Real Madrid travel to play Racing Santander on Sunday and are in the hunt for a 12th consecutive league win. Barcelona will be without Andres Iniesta who is injured as well as Dani Alves who is suspended but available for next weekend’s showdown with Real Madrid.
This Clasico between the top two teams in the country is set to be one of the most important as it could prove decisive in both team’s bids for the league title.
