The Ministry of Labour and Immigration, Celestino Corbacho has said that the administration must promote awareness of Castellano or co-official languages to immigrants, but not as an obligation. Imposing the Catalan language on immigrants for example, would have a counterproductive effect, the minister noted in an interview with El Periodico de Catalunya, which it considers a misguided approach to force people in this regard.
Corbacho said that the reform of the immigration law seeks to put in order the regrouping of families because Spain is a country with four million residents with “tarjetas de residencia” (resident id cards) – which will differ among the different types of family ie:nuclear family or couples with children younger than 18 years of age and families with parents/grandparents.
According to the minister, the regulation will have to study or develop the conditions of the immigrant for the right to family reunification which will be linked to housing and economic conditions.
Corbacho it would be desirable to agree on the reform of the law with the greatest consensus possible.
