Barcelona to eliminate more than 4,300 Franco plaques

Barcelona is to eliminate over 4,300 plaques and remnants from buildings and façades from the General Franco era. They will also be taking away statues and fascist monuments such as those dedicated to “Primo de Rivera“.Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris and Sarrià-Sant Gervasì are where most of these Franco relics are to be found.
Most of these plaques have the typical “yoke and arrows” emblems and were placed on buildings such as “las viviendas de protección oficial” or protected housing that was built during the dictatorship. These will be removed if the neighbours agree to it.
The majority of these plaques are to be found in the Horta-Guinardó neighbourhoods of Barcelona with 854 of them. Next up is the area of Nou Barris with 706 closely followed by the areas of Sarrià-Sant Gervasì with 562 and Sant Martì with 467. It appears that the above areas have the majority of these commerative plaques as they were the areas in Barcelona that flourished the most in this time of development.

Don’t worry, Arch. The catalans (at least a high proportion of them) are VERY proud of their heritage. They make it clear EVERY SINGLE day…
Hard to believe that hard core despots existed in Western Europe in the 1970s. Intentionally trying to kill off a culture, with such a remarkable past simply baffles me. Very few people realize how much impact Catalans had on the many things in history. Such as making permanent settlements in California and the first Governors, etc. Maritime codes and procedures used throughout the Middle Ages. A history that goes back well into Iberic/Carthaginian period with the making of swords and pilums that influenced Roman weaponry. I could go on, but Catalans should be proud of their heritage and I would suspect are well aware of the importance of liberty and of freedoms. By all rights it should be its own country. The counts of Barcelona and Aragon creating a sphere of influence felt far and wide in the Mediterranean and as far as the Canary Islands in the Middle Ages. A remarkable culture and history.
I am stunned there are so many after what I read about Franco’s era and what he did.
