Alonso finally decides on Renault

So our little Spanish friend has finally decided that his future lies with Renault – the team that blessed him with 2 world championships. Alonso has signed a two year deal with an option to sign for a third year should things go his way.Alonso’s decision was helped by the fact Renault avoided punishment for their role in the spy saga, despite the fact they were found guilty of fraudulent conduct. They were as guilty as Mclaren but were not handed out the hefty fine which seems a bit unfair in my opinion. Although refusing to divulge the number of options open to him, he added: “I’m one of the 22 privileged people who drives a Formula One car each year.”I’m even more privileged to be one of those who can afford to leave one great team (McLaren) and end up in another great team.”While there are a lot of drivers who never get the chance to drive a Formula One car, so the decision wasn’t an easy one to make.”But I would like to thank all the other teams for their interest to have me work with them.”"In the end, I chose Renault considering their commitment to the sport and because of their strong track record.”Personally I think señorito Alonso will have a sabatical year or two out of this as Renault’s main goal is keeping up with the BMW’s and not the Mclarens or Ferraris. One of Reanult’s engineers has also stated that they have a lot of work to do in the wind tunnel along with the adaptation of the car to the Bridgestone tyres.2008 will be a very interesting year for F1 without a shadow of a doubt. There is already talk of rivalry in the team as Alonso’s team mate is none other than Nelsinho Piquet – the son of three times world Formula 1 champion Nelson. Basically Nelson has said that his son will “play second fiddle to nobody”. Interestingly, for next season Alonso has managed to secure himself the coveted “number one spot” and the recognition that goes along with it – something that the Spaniard didn’t enjoy in Mclaren and was one of the reasons for the Spaniards tantrums. Coupled with the fact that his number 2 driver, Lewis Hamilton was extremely quick last year kind of added insult to injury and dented Alonso’s pride – hence the antics of waiting in the pits while your fellow driver is behind and denying him another timing session and threatening your boss with some emails if he doesn’t recognise your world champion status in the team. Who says that history doesn’t repeat iteslf! It looks very much like Alonso has jumped out of the fire and into the frying pan!Fernando Alonso has admitted he needs “the perfect season” if he is to again win the Formula One world title with Renault.”The first thing to do is to put the car on the track in January and then start working thoroughly in order to get to the first grand prix of the season with the best car possible.” “After that, I will have to have a perfect season and hope for the others not to be too quick.”
